There are many species of finch found all across the world. The term "finch" can be further divided into different families of birds such as waxbills, estrildids and mannikins. Canaries are also classified as finches and they belong to a group called serins.
The term "softbill" refers more to a birds diet than to the composition of its beak. Softbills eat foods that are relatively soft such as fruit and insects rather than seeds or nuts. Examples of softbilled birds include toucans, tanagers, mynahs and many more.
